What Is Classical Ballet?

Classical Ballet is a structured form of dance that builds technique through precise, intentional movement. Training centres on barre work, where dancers develop stability, posture, and foundational footwork while supported by a Ballet barre, and centre work, where those skills are applied in open space. Ballet trains the whole body: posture, coordination, strength, flexibility, and spatial awareness all develop together through consistent, guided practice. What sets Ballet apart from other dance styles is its emphasis on technical precision and its role as the foundation for almost every other dance discipline your dancer may choose to explore.

Who Is Ballet For?

Ballet at MDA is open to all children from age 3 and up. There are no prerequisites, no prior dance experience required, and no particular physical qualities your dancer needs to bring on day one. Ballet builds those qualities gradually through structured training. Complete beginners are welcome in the younger age groupings and as dancers get older some prerequisites are required to ensure safe training practices. Each class level is designed to develop your dancer in a a safe & comprehensive manner.

Our Ballet Program at MDA

MDA’s Ballet curriculum follows the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) syllabus, an internationally recognised, structured framework developed to guide dancers through a clearly defined path of progression. The RAD approach ensures that your dancer is not just learning steps but building genuine technical understanding at each stage.

Younger students begin with foundational work: learning how the body moves, basic positions, simple barre exercises, and introductory choreography that makes technique feel playful and accessible. As dancers progress through the levels, training incorporates more detailed centre work, increased physical challenge, and classical repertoire. At every stage, the goal is the same: develop technique that is sound, expressive, and built to last.

Performance is woven into the MDA experience. Ballet students perform in the Year-End Showcase, where they have the opportunity to share their work with family and friends in a professional theatre setting. This experience, preparing, rehearsing, and performing, is one of the most meaningful parts of a dancer’s year.

Why Families in SE Calgary Choose MDA

Dance studios are not all the same. Here is what sets MDA apart.

01

An internationally recognised curriculum

MDA teaches Ballet through the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) syllabus, a framework used in over 79 countries that provides measurable progression and formal exam opportunities. Your dancer is not following a patchwork of exercises; they are working through a system designed by specialists to develop technical excellence over time. The RAD syllabus gives your dancer a clear path, and gives you a clear way to see how they are growing.

02

Teaching that builds understanding, not just movement

MDA instructors are certified and experienced, and their approach to technique goes beyond demonstration. In class, your dancer learns why a movement works the way it does, not just how to perform it. This builds a physical intelligence that transfers across styles and stays with dancers as they grow. Technique that is understood is technique that is retained.

03

A welcoming, encouraging studio environment

MDA has built a reputation as a studio where children feel genuinely at home. For children who are new to studio life or who take a little extra time to settle into a new environment, MDA’s patient, consistent teaching approach has made a real difference. This comes through clearly in the experiences families share, and it is something the studio actively works to maintain at every age group and level.

Frequently Asked Questions

MDA offers Ballet from age 3. Starting young builds foundational coordination and musicality, but dancers of all ages are welcome as complete beginners. There is no wrong time to begin, and every level at MDA is designed to meet your dancer where they are..

A beginner class opens with a warm welcome and age-appropriate warm-up, moves into barre exercises that introduce stance, turnout, and basic footwork, then transitions to centre work and simple choreography. Classes are structured but welcoming, with consistent routines that help young dancers feel settled and confident from the first session.

Ballet builds the foundational technique, including posture, body awareness, strength, and musicality, that carries into every other dance discipline. Many MDA dancers study Ballet alongside one or more other styles throughout the year.

Ballet students often find Lyrical and Contemporary a natural next step, building on the classical foundation with greater expressive freedom. If you have a younger child at home, the Preschool dance program is designed for the earliest stages of dance exploration. Many Ballet students also take Jazz, which complements classical training with strength and flexibility work in a different technical context.
