The Competitive Journey at Mahogany Dance Arts
Dance is all about growth. At Mahogany Dance Arts, our Competitive Program sits beautifully alongside our Recreational Program, focusing more on advanced skill development, flexibility, working with a team and skills that will carry you beyond the Dance studio.
Our Competitive journey is a curated pathway that begins early. Our studio directors and faculty carefully observe our youngest dancers in their Recreational classes, identifying those who show a natural spark, consistent enthusiasm, and a readiness for more. At age 6, selected dancers who have built a strong foundational love for movement with MDA are invited into our Competitive stream.
We view this transition as a wonderful partnership. The invitation to join our Competitive Program is guided collaboratively by our studio directors, the faculty, and the family. Director selection ensures that every young dancer is placed exactly where they will feel confident and successful. This step is a shared celebration, made when a dancer is genuinely ready and excited to take their training to the next level.

What Is Competitive Dance?
Competitive Dance is an exciting, structured training pathway designed for dancers who love to perform, grow, and be part of a dedicated team.
Instead of just one end-of-year show, Competitive dancers get the thrill of sharing their hard work at competitions and events throughout the season, as well as our Year-End Showcase!
At these events, dancers perform for industry experts. Rather than just a critique, this is a wonderful experience where your dancer receives valuable, encouraging feedback from outside professionals. This expert insight highlights their unique technical strengths and gives them exciting new milestones to reach for. Because they are preparing for multiple stage appearances, Competitive dancers train more frequently, build deeper friendships with their teammates, and develop an incredible sense of confidence that shines both on and off the stage.
Our Competitive Program at MDA
At Mahogany Dance Arts, our Competitive Program is designed to inspire growth, teamwork, and a lifelong love for dance. Our training is structured around four core priorities:
Choosing the Competitive path is an exciting step! Because our dancers are training at a higher level, it does involve a wonderful, dedicated time commitment. Depending on your dancer’s age and level, they will typically spend a minimum of three and up to six days per week at the studio, which can include weekends.
While Competitive dancers work harder and more intensely, they are never doing it alone. Our faculty is here to support, guide, and cheer your family on every single step of the way.
Technical Training
Technical precision is the foundation of everything our Competitive dancers achieve. Across all disciplines, our training focuses on building the clean technique and strong fundamentals valued by industry professionals, ensuring our dancers are highly capable, versatile, and confident on any stage.
Performance Preparation
At MDA we empower Competitive dancers with the technique and artistry needed to truly own their performance. The confidence, presence, and focus they cultivate on stage are among the most valuable assets our dancers carry with them into the studio and far beyond.
Group and Solo Opportunities
Competitive dancers at MDA perform in group ensembles and have opportunities to develop solo work, tailored to their experience and readiness. Both offer unique developmental benefits: group work fosters teamwork, while solo work cultivates individual accountability, confidence, and personal artistic expression.
Adjudications, Competitions and the Year-End Showcase
Throughout the season, Competitive dancers perform at three competitions throughout the season, gaining real-stage experience and professional feedback. They also participate in MDA’s Year-End Showcase and gives every dancer, recreational and competitive, a shared moment to celebrate the year’s work.
A Balanced Environment
At MDA, our Competitive Program is designed to deepen a dancer’s passion for the art form while encouraging their technical growth. We maintain high standards of dedication and discipline, balanced with a warm, supportive environment. Our focus goes far beyond trophies; we are dedicated to developing skilled, resilient dancers who are deeply proud of their progress, their team, and their personal achievements.

Is Competitive Dance Right for Your Dancer?
This is a wonderful question to explore, and MDA is here to help you navigate it. Our Competitive Program is not reserved for a select few; rather, it is designed for any dancer who craves more commitment, greater challenge, and additional performance opportunities.
Signs that a dancer is ready for the Competitive stream include a strong technical foundation, focused approach and consistent enthusiasm in class, a readiness to dedicate time to extra rehearsals, and a desire to perform on stage beyond our Year-End Showcase. Readiness is about passion and commitment, not initial technical perfection. For our younger dancers, we look for a foundation of at least two years of training with MDA to ensure they feel confident and prepared for the exciting step up to Competitive work.
We view the transition from Recreational to Competitive Dance as a true partnership. Our instructors naturally observe and celebrate your dancer’s growth over time, and when the opportunity arises, we connect with your family directly.
If your family is interested in taking this next step, simply reach out to the studio. As part of our collaborative placement process, we’ll ask you to share a short video of your dancer’s current skills. Our studio directors review these videos to ensure every dancer is placed in the level where they will thrive, feel confident, and find the most success. We are dedicated to ensuring every dancer steps onto the Competitive track only when they are fully ready to shine.

01
A Studio Where Ambition and Well-being Go Hand in Hand
At MDA, we believe that Competitive training should elevate a dancer in every way. Our philosophy is designed to build skill, ignite confidence, and deepen a love for the art form over the course of the season. We measure our success by our dancers’ growth and happiness, ensuring they finish the year feeling accomplished, inspired, and excited for the future.
02
A Clear, Collaborative Pathway
Every dancer’s journey starts with a single step, and you don’t need to have their whole future mapped out on day one! Recreational classes are the perfect place to explore, have fun, and fall in love with dance. As your dancer grows, our instructors—who genuinely care about what’s best for your child—will help guide them toward the path that fits them perfectly. Whether they stay recreational or choose our clearly defined Competitive track, MDA is with you every step of the way.
03
Faculty with Proven Competitive Expertise
MDA’s instructors bring firsthand Competitive experience to the studio. Having excelled on the Competitive stage themselves, they offer invaluable insight into current adjudication standards and the nuances of elite performance. They excel at preparing dancers to channel performance energy into focused confidence, teaching students how to utilize constructive feedback as a tool for continuous advancement. This technical and artistic expertise shapes our entire curriculum.

Frequently Asked Questions
Most dancers entering the Competitive stream are age 6 or older, though readiness is always assessed individually rather than by age alone. Dancers build their foundation in Recreational classes first, and the move to Competitive happens when the studio and family agree the time is right.
Competitive dancers train more frequently, work toward adjudications and festival performances, and carry additional rehearsal commitments throughout the season. Recreational dancers focus on class learning and the Year-End Showcase. Both streams are taught by the same qualified instructors in the same studio environment.
Additional Program Costs
In addition to monthly tuition, families should plan for additional costs that are part of the Competitive program. These include a program fee, choreography fees, costumes, dress rehearsal, competition entry fees, and a team uniform. Exam fees apply for dancers who participate in examination opportunities. A Back to Dance Summer Intensive may also be required, depending on the level. MDA is transparent about these costs, and the studio team is happy to walk through the full picture before a family commits.
