New to Dance?
New to Dance? Don’t know where to start? We appreciate how hard it is to pick the perfect class for your little one’s first dance experience.
Not to worry, we’ve got you covered. Below are MDA’s tips on picking the correct class & everything you will need to get your dancer off on the right foot!
Whether you are just starting or have already taken a couple of classes, summer is the perfect time to start dancing, especially at Mahogany Dance Arts. With the variety of summer camps and classes, it is easy and affordable to discover a new style of dance.
Our week-long summer camps run Monday to Thursday and are the perfect combination of structure and FUN! The positive environment created by our teachers is ideal for beginners and for brushing up on the basics. If weekly classes work better, summer sessionals are for you.
Every Tuesday we offer classes for a variety of ages and abilities all summer long. These weekly classes are great for technique, teamwork, and preparing your little dancer for the fall. These classes and camps are optimal for exploring the creative arts with limited commitment. Grab your friends and try something new!
Although age and previous dance experience are important, it is also valuable to understand your dancer’s short and long-term goals. Are you looking to develop friendships and a strong foundation for future classes?
Or are you simply seeking a recreational activity and fun moves for those family night dance parties? Next, consider your child’s interests, dance should be FUN. We suggest exposing your child to as many dance genres as possible. The impact that dance has on the lives of children is endless whichever avenue you chose for your dancer. The benefits of physical movement, specifically DANCE stimulates every bit of the body, mind & soul. In addition to whichever class you choose, it is beneficial to begin taking classes in ballet.
Technical training and technique are important for developing discipline and dedication. Ballet teaches us the foundations for all forms of dance. It also acts as an asset for all other activities. Ballet assists with stamina, strength, posture and poise.
Mahogany Dance Arts follows the Royal Academy of Dancing Syllabus and the curriculum includes barre, centre, across the floor and progressions. In addition to power and control, ballet introduces your little dancer to a new vocabulary specific to dance.
Ballet helps develop a strong technical foundation so your child can excel in a wide variety of social settings and sports. In addition to Ballet, Jazz and Tap are also important. The combination of all technical disciplines create a well-rounded and versatile dancer.
It's Never Too Early to Start
It is never too early (and never too late) to take your first dance class.
At Mahogany Dance Arts, we understand the nervous butterfly feeling and help ease you, and your little dancer, into their first class. Don’t worry we’ll let them hold your hand;)
If you have a child between the ages of one and a half and three years old, start with Rock with your Tot. Rock with your Tot is a parented class and the perfect introduction to dance. Mahogany Dance Arts eliminates any insecurities by welcoming parents and caregivers into the class.
Children refine gross motor skills and coordination in a safe, upbeat and fun learning environment. The smaller class sizes are conducive to making friends and connections in the community. Together we explore and learn independence to prepare for un-parented classes.
To proactively deliver the best possible experience to our youngest budding dancers, we highly recommend these parented classes first to ensure a positive transition. Rock with your Tot classes are a great opportunity to learn to dance and spend quality time with your kids.
For experienced dancers who want to take their training to the next level, Mahogany Dance Arts offers a competition team.
This program focuses on teamwork, choreography, goal setting, and growth. In addition to dance competitions and conventions, there are opportunities to participate in dance exams.
These exams and competitions help children develop a healthy mindset around winning, losing, and external critique. The increase in practices and performance opportunities help dancers work as a team and truly shine on stage.
With so many different forms of dance, it is difficult to know where to start and which classes to take. We strive to make dance a positive experience and offer pre-recorded sample classes so both parents and kids can find the right fit. These virtual dance classes are yours to enjoy from the comfort of your own home so you can dance like nobody’s watching.
