What Is Hip Hop Dance?
Hip Hop dance is a style rooted in rhythm, self-expression, and musicality. Originally emerging from the streets of New York in the 1970s, it has grown into a global art form with a rich vocabulary of movement, from foundational grooves and isolations to freestyle improvisation and structured choreography. For children, Hip Hop is one of the most accessible entry points into dance: the music is engaging, the movement feels natural, and there is room for every dancer to bring something individual to the floor. Classes at MDA aim to keep young dancers motivated and energized.
Who Is Hip Hop For?
The Hip Hop track at MDA begins at age 5. No experience is required: the class starts from the very beginning, building rhythm and foundational movement skills in a supportive group setting. All children are welcome, regardless of background, experience level, or prior exposure to dance.
For younger children ages 3 and 4, MDA offers Acro Bop, a separate program that introduces small dancers to rhythm and movement in an age-appropriate way.

Our Hip Hop Program at MDA
Hip Hop classes at MDA offer both skill development and fun. Students learn foundational moves, grooves, and isolations in the early levels, building toward more complex choreography and freestyle as they progress.
Rhythm training is a core component of every class: dancers develop musicality and timing alongside the physical upbeat style of movement.
Classes are high-energy but organized, with instructors guiding students through warm-ups, skill work, and choreography within each session.
Throughout the year, dancers work toward a concrete goal: the Year-End Showcase! This performance opportunity gives every student a stage to share what they have worked toward, building stage presence, focus, and the satisfaction of a finished piece.
