Lyrical & Contemporary Dance Classes in Calgary

Artistic expression, emotional depth, and a strong technical foundation come together in Lyrical and Contemporary Dance. These complementary styles give your dancer tools that go beyond the studio: body awareness, emotional storytelling, stage presence, and the confidence to move with intention. At Mahogany Dance Arts in SE Calgary, Lyrical and Contemporary are woven throughout our programs, meeting dancers at every stage of their journey.

Your dancer can explore these styles through several programs. The Fusion Combo (Ballet and Contemporary) is available for ages 9 to 11, and the Teen Fusion Combo continues that work for ages 11 to 13. Dancers in the Competitive stream also train in Lyrical as part of a comprehensive multi-discipline program. Wherever your dancer is in their journey, there is a place for expressive, technique-grounded movement at MDA.

What is Lyrical / Contemporary Dance?

Lyrical and Contemporary Dance are rooted in the technical foundation of Ballet, drawing on classical alignment and body awareness, and blending them with the energy of Jazz, the freedom of modern movement, and expressive floor work. The result is a style built on genuine technical skill, used to communicate something personal. Your dancer learns to interpret lyric-driven music with intention, connect emotion to movement, and perform with a depth that carries through every other style they develop.

In class at MDA, your dancer works on the qualities that make Lyrical and Contemporary so compelling: core strength, flexibility, spatial awareness, and the ability to connect technique with genuine artistic intent. The focus goes beyond mastering steps. It extends to the stage presence, dedication, and self-confidence that come from moving with real purpose.

Who Is This Style For?

Lyrical and Contemporary work particularly well for dancers who already have some foundation in Ballet or Jazz. The technique built in those classes gives your dancer the vocabulary to access what makes these styles so expressive. Many dancers arrive at Lyrical or Contemporary having trained in Ballet or Jazz and find that it deepens and extends what they already know.

These styles also welcome dancers who are drawn to expressive movement from the start. If your child loves lyric-driven music and is looking for a style that rewards genuine expression, Lyrical and Contemporary are a natural fit. All experience levels are welcome, and MDA has structured programs that grow with your dancer, including pathways into the competitive stream for dancers ready to take their training further.

Why Choose MDA for Lyrical & Contemporary?

01

Instructors Who Nurture Both Heart and Technique

Lyrical and Contemporary ask your dancer to bring something personal to every performance. At MDA, our instructors understand that this does not happen through technical instruction alone. It requires a studio environment where your dancer feels genuinely supported, comfortable enough to take creative risks, and encouraged to develop their own artistic voice. Our instructors bring both the expertise to teach these styles well and the patience to create that environment for every dancer in the room.

02

Age-Appropriate Class Content

Lyrical and Contemporary classes are thoughtfully structured around each dancer’s age and stage of development. This allows instructors to give dancers the attention they need while keeping classes engaging, supportive, and appropriately challenging. Younger dancers can build confidence as they explore movement and musicality, while older dancers are encouraged to develop greater control, expression, and individuality. The result is an environment where every dancer has the space to grow creatively and technically at a pace that feels right for them.

03

A Real Performance Stage to Work Toward

The Year-End Showcase gives lyrical and contemporary dancers a meaningful performance experience at the end of each season, with a real stage and a live audience to work toward. Having that concrete goal makes the training more purposeful and the progress more visible throughout the year. For competitive dancers, additional performance opportunities throughout the season provide further chances to develop stage presence and artistic confidence.
