What Is Preschool Dance?
Preschool Dance is structured, age-appropriate movement designed for children between the ages of 2 and 4.
Classes combine guided movement, music exploration, imaginative play, and simple creative exercises that keep young dancers engaged while helping them become more comfortable using their bodies in new ways.
At this age, Dance is less about mastering specific techniques and more about building the foundations that make future learning easier. Children gradually become familiar with the structure of a class, learn to listen and follow their instructor, and gain confidence participating independently alongside other children.
Most importantly, Preschool Dance gives young dancers a positive first experience with movement and music. By keeping classes playful, supportive, and developmentally appropriate, we help children build a genuine love of Dance long before more formal technique becomes the focus.
What Will My Child Learn?
The benefits of early Dance extend well beyond the studio. Through Preschool Dance classes at MDA, your little one develops coordination and movement as they navigate sequences and explore their own body in space. Our Preschool Program at MDA
Each Preschool class at MDA follows a gentle, predictable structure that young children thrive in. Classes begin with a warm-up to help children arrive and settle into the space, followed by guided movement activities that introduce basic dance concepts. Simple choreography and movement patterns are introduced in ways that feel like exploration rather than instruction, and every class closes with a goodbye song that gives children a sense of completion.
For children ages 2 to 3, MDA offers Twinkle Stars, a Parented Sessional class where you participate alongside your little one. This is a wonderful first introduction to the studio environment, and it gives you a front-row view of your child discovering movement for the first time.
For children ages 3 to 4 who are ready for their first independent class experience, MDA offers Budding Ballerina, Starlettes (a combination of Ballet, Jazz, and Tap), Disney Make Believe Ballet and Acro Bop. These classes use a drop-and-go model and are available as full-year programs or sessional options, giving your family the flexibility to choose what works best.
What to Expect at the First Class
For most Preschool Classes at MDA (ages 3 and up), the studio uses a drop-and-go model. This means parents drop children off at the start of class and pick them up at the end, rather than staying in the room. This approach is thoughtfully designed to help children build independence and settle into the class environment on their own terms. Many children transition more quickly when they are not watching the door. Parents are warmly invited to observe during our special Observation classes (full-term) or the final class (Sessional), which gives you a meaningful window into everything your dancer has been working on.
For Twinkle Stars (ages 2 to 3), you stay and participate with your child throughout the class.
