What Is Tap Dance?
Tap Dance is a percussive art form in which metal plates, called Taps, are affixed to the heel and toe of the dancer’s shoes. When the feet strike the floor, those Taps produce distinct sounds, turning the dancer into a live musical instrument. Each step, shuffle, and combination contributes to a rhythmic sequence between the dancer and the music. Rooted in a rich performance tradition, Tap demands coordination, musicality, timing, and body awareness inequal measure, making it one of the most technically complete styles in the Dance world.
Who Is Tap For?
Tap at MDA is accessible from age three. Younger dancers encounter Tap as one component of the Starlettes combo class, which pairs Ballet, Jazz, and Tap into a single age-appropriate program. This introduction builds rhythm and body coordination in a playful, engaging setting before technical expectations are introduced.
From ages five and up, Tap becomes available as an individual class for dancers who want more focused footwork training alongside their other classes. Competitive Tap is all available in our well rounded Competitive program to ensure a full & comprehensive program.
Whether your dancer is stepping into Tap for the first time or deepening an existing technical practice, MDA’s structured approach meets them at the right level.
Our Tap Program at MDA
Tap instruction at MDA follows a clear developmental pathway. In the early years, the focus is on rhythm awareness, basic footwork, and the simple joy of making music with movement. As students progress, they learn foundational techniques including shuffles, flaps, pullbacks, and rhythm patterns, before moving into more complex combinations and choreography.
The program pathway is organized as follows:
- Starlettes combo (ages 3 to 4): Ballet, Jazz, and Tap introduced together as part of a single early-childhood class
- Recreational add-on (ages 5 & up): Tap available as an additional class for dancers building out their training. Offering dedicated technical training in footwork, rhythm, and musicality
- Competitive Tap: Available within MDA’s competitive stream for dancers ready for adjudicated performances.
All Tap students at MDA perform at the Year-End Showcase, giving your dancer a concrete performance goal and the experience of sharing their work with a live audience.

Why Choose MDA for Tap?
Choosing the right studio for Tap instruction means looking for structure, expertise, and a clear pathway from first steps to performance-ready technique. MDA delivers on all three.
01
A structured pathway across multiple age groups
Tap at MDA does not begin and end with one class. The program is designed so that a dancer who starts in Starlettes at age three can move through recreational add-on training and eventually into competitive Tap. That continuity matters for skill development and for keeping your dancer engaged over time.
02
Instructors who treat Tap as a technical discipline
Tap is sometimes treated as a supplementary style, something layered on top of a primary focus. At MDA, the instructors who teach Tap understand it as a complete technical art form in its own right. The emphasis on rhythm, musicality, timing, and coordination reflects that commitment.
03
A performance goal every year
The Year-End Showcase gives Tap dancers a concrete reason to refine their work and the experience of performing in front of a live audience. That performance confidence carries well beyond the studio.

Yes. Tap shoes have metal plates, called taps, on the heel and toe that produce the percussive sound central to the style. Tap shoes differ from Ballet slippers or Jazz shoes and are required for Tap classes. MDA can advise families on where to purchase appropriate footwear when they register.

Absolutely. Tap’s emphasis on rhythm and musicality complements Ballet, Jazz, and other styles effectively. Many MDA dancers take Tap as part of a broader program, using it to sharpen their timing and musical awareness in ways that transfer directly to their other training.
