What Is Jazz Dance?

Jazz is a high-energy, technically demanding performance style. In the studio, Jazz develops flexibility, coordination, and stage presence through a structured focus on kicks, turns, and jumps. It is one of the most versatile styles in dance: the physical confidence and technical foundation built in Jazz class transfers across every other style your dancer goes on to explore.

Our Jazz Program at MDA

In Jazz class at MDA, your dancer works on foundational technique: turns, jumps, leaps, kicks, and the sequences that build coordination, strength, and precision. Classes also develop musicality, which means learning to hear music and respond to it with intention and dynamics. Choreography is woven through every level, so your dancer is always working toward something, including the Year-End Showcase held each spring.

Classes are structured by age and experience level. Younger dancers in the 5-7 range focus on rhythm, coordination, and growing comfortable in a studio environment. From ages 8 and up, the technical demands increase: dancers work on more complex combinations, develop their own performance style, and start to understand what it means to train consistently over time. Recreational and Competitive streams are both available, so families can choose the level of commitment that suits their dancer right now, with a clear pathway forward for those who want to go further.

Why Choose MDA for Jazz?

01

Instruction grounded in real technique

Jazz at MDA is taught by qualified, experienced instructors who bring genuine expertise to every class. They explain the reason behind what your dancer is learning, not just the steps, which means technique is retained and built on rather than just repeated. The program follows a clear progression from beginner through to advanced and competitive levels, so your dancer always knows what they are working toward.

02

Builds confidence in every dancer

MDA’s Jazz instructors are patient, skilled, and genuinely experienced at helping every dancer find their confidence and build their skills, including children who are new to studio life. It comes up repeatedly in unprompted reviews from parents in the community: children thrived in the environment because instructors know how to bring out what is already there. This is not something every studio can say.

03

Performance with a purpose

Every Recreational Jazz student performs at the Year-End Showcase, held each spring. It is a real performance on a real stage, and it is something families in the community come back to talk about year after year. For Competitive dancers, there are additional performance and examination opportunities throughout the year. The Showcase gives your dancer a concrete goal to work toward from the very first class.
